Ken Crowther looks at Dutch gardens and styles

Windmill with rows of colourful tulips in Holland.

Autumn planting for success in the spring is part of the Dutch way, especially when it comes to the much favoured tulip.

So much so that ‘tulip mania’ swept across the Netherlands and Dutch traders quickly bought up bulbs that produced striped and speckled flowers.

Post in the comments section about how you’ve made changes to your garden to make it more like a Dutch garden >>> Have you planted tulips?

Here are some simple tricks from Ken to turn your garden a little bit Dutch.

1: A flat lawn – don’t cut it too short, but to around 2 inches.

2: Use bulbs for borders and as a main feature. In fact bulbs, bulbs and more bulbs.

3: Plant tulips and remember that these can bloom as early as April through to the end of May, depending on the varieties planted.

Listen to the full programme for more on what gives Dutch gardens that unique style.

The tulip is one of the stand out flowers from the Netherlands and Ken Crowther along with Adam Pasco explore the production and growing of these bulbs and the multi-headed variety.

Ken has visited the tulips in bloom at Keukenhof in Holland and you can listen back to his audio tour of the wonderful and celebrated Dutch gardens.

We hope this feature has brought a little of this wonderful garden style to life here on World Radio Gardening.
