Pieris Problems

Q: Hello Ken. We have two large (older) Pieris Forest Flame bushes which gave a good show early in the year, but in June we noticed they began to grow  thin and weak. This is when we also noticed small flies on the under side of the leaves.  We took some samples to Hyde Hall but they could not identify them and said they would send them to Wisley who would get back to me. I’m still waiting.  I just wondered whether you could offer any ideas and if they return next year should I do anything about them. Any advice would be appeciated. Regards, Terry Whitworth

A: The flies I think are attracted to the substance left by aphids which is sweet, so this would make sense, we often find it is ants that are attracted in this way. As for the poor plant if it is not looking good I suggest some Sequested Iron Granules put around the base and a spray over the foliage with MaxiCrop at two week intervals before the end of Autumn, then feed again in Spring.  Hope this helps. Ken
